His designs evolved with the changing social use and technologies of building. He created over 180 buildings throughout his career. Several of his designs are listed on the Victorian Heritage Register.
One of his best-known works is Australia Square Tower. This heritage-listed tower was the tallest lightweight concrete building in the world when it was constructed in 1967. It was also the first skyscraper in Australia.
Throughout his career, Seidler produced a number of residential, office and commercial buildings in Australia. He became the leader in the field of design in the country. In addition, he worked with leading international artists such as Sol LeWitt and Frank Stella.
He also received an Honorary Fellowship from the American Institute of Architects in 1966. He was named a Member of the Academy d’architecture in 1984. And he received the Sir John Sulman Medal five times for his architectural projects.

Sven Maxa
Sven Maxa, building designer in Melbourne Victoria, recently won the coveted Building Design of the Year award at the prestigious Design Matters National 2020 Building Design Awards. Held in Melbourne, this year’s awards recognised both commercial and residential entries that represent outstanding design and construction.
One of the competition’s key categories was the use of recycled materials, which Sven Maxa’s Earth House won. It features a rammed earth construction, which is not only energy efficient but also sustainable.
The house also incorporates a solar hot water system and high-performance triple-glazed windows. As well as this, the home is built using recyclable steel sheeting.
In addition to this, the home features a sawtooth roof that captures sunlight. Combined with a zigzag facade, the result is a thermally comfortable home.
Maxa Design has a strong reputation for leading-edge sustainable design. Seven of its projects are Passive House designs.
The studio’s office in Blackburn uses 100% green power. They also purchase carbon offsets to cover the remainder of their emissions.
The practice also specialises in the construction of high-quality eco homes. They have won several awards for their Passive House projects.
Their Nunawading home was featured in the first Open for Inspection event by Inside Out magazine. Although the house is a relatively small space, the team took advantage of its location and views to create a home that is comfortable in both summer and winter.
WoodSolutions
If you’re a design professional, you should know about WoodSolutions. Their website offers free technical design guides on timber products. It also has case studies on designing with wood.
The website is a resource that’s available to professionals in the construction industry, including architects, designers, builders and others. You can learn about the technical details of timber, the environmental benefits of using it, and how to specify it for new applications.
Timber prefabrication has the potential to create carbon-positive buildings. Several studies have shown that wood has a lower carbon footprint than other competing materials. However, many building professionals do not have enough information about how to specify it for different applications.
The Responsible Products Framework has been created by the Green Building Council of Australia to define responsible wood products. It recognises schemes that have transparency, a positive impact on the environment, and human rights.
Jason Ross, Responsible Wood’s national marketing manager, will judge the entries in the BDAA awards program. He has a background in the construction and building industries.
The Building Designers Association of Australia represents members in State Planning. They also hold a day conference on 25 August at Sculptform Design Studio.
The BDAA encourages its members to attend. Attendees will receive eight CPD points.
